Application Blocking

Web Safety can also block specific web applications based on the domain name being connected to, origin IP address, UserAgent string and other attributes of the HTTP request and response.

To configure this setting, navigate to Web Filter / Policy / Rules / Apps and Restrictions / Application Control as shown on the following screenshot.

Application Control

Click Add New, select the application from the list, provide comment for your own use and click Save Changes.

Application Control

When a request for a blocked application is received, this request will be denied with the following page shown. Note how the reason for blocking is identified with the app: prefix.

Apps Blocked

The list of known applications is stored in the /opt/websafety/var/spool/apps folder and automatically updated from time to time.

App Exclusions

The same list of apps can be used in the Admin UI / Squid / Global Exclusions as shown on the following screenshot. Unfortunately, it is only possible to apply exclusions based on the domain name being connected to and origin IP address due to the internal architecture of Squid and ICAP web filter integration in Web Safety.
